Hopeman’s coastline is one of the things that makes our village such a special place to live, visit and enjoy.

One area particularly important to our community is Hopeman East Beach, but like many parts of our coastline, it is constantly changing.

Over the years, the effects of coastal erosion have become increasingly visible at East Beach. The beach has become progressively narrower in places, areas of the rocky platform are more exposed, sections of dune have slumped, and we have seen cracked pathways and damage to fencing close to the beach.

Working with nature at Hopeman East Beach

Hopeman Community Association is now working towards an exciting community-led dune protection project at Hopeman East Beach, aimed at helping protect and strengthen this important part of our coastline.

Rather than trying to stop natural coastal processes completely, the project aims to work with nature, helping the dunes to rebuild and become more resilient.

The proposed work will include using recycled Christmas trees within sections of the dune, installing chestnut paling fencing and planting marram grass.

These relatively simple, nature-based measures can help trap wind-blown sand and encourage it to accumulate around the dunes. As vegetation becomes established and the dunes rebuild, they should become stronger and better able to absorb the effects of wind, waves and storms.

More than coastal protection

Healthy dunes do much more than create a natural barrier between the sea and the land behind them.

They provide valuable habitat, support biodiversity and form an important part of the landscape that residents and visitors enjoy throughout the year.

The Hopeman East Beach Dune Protection Project is therefore not only about responding to erosion. It is also about improving our local environment, encouraging people to learn more about our coastline and creating opportunities for the community to become involved in looking after it.

Most importantly, this is intended to be a community project.

We hope residents will have opportunities to get involved as the project develops, whether through planting, practical volunteering, monitoring the dunes or simply learning more about how our coastline changes over time.

Building resilience for the future

There is no single solution to coastal erosion, and our coastline will continue to change.

However, by supporting the natural development of the dunes at Hopeman East Beach now, we can help make them more stable and resilient while taking a proactive and sustainable approach to future coastal change.

Once established, the dunes should require relatively little ongoing intervention, with community monitoring and occasional maintenance helping us identify where further action may be needed.

Hopeman Community Association is currently seeking funding to allow the Hopeman East Beach Dune Protection Project to move forward.

We will continue to share updates with residents as plans develop, including opportunities to get involved.

East Beach is an important part of Hopeman, and by working together we can help care for our coastline for the generations that follow.

Protecting Hopeman’s coast starts with all of us.
